JUNE 2019

Hello Book Lovers!

We met last Thursday night at the home of Liz Orton where we enjoyed some delicious homemade bread and jam, chocolate chip cookies, fresh strawberries and raspberries. It was nice to be together but we missed a few, too. Hopefully they will be able to join us next month.  Here is a list of the books that were discussed:


JO ANN ABEGGLEN
The Good Pilot Peter Woodhouse by Alexander McCall Smith.  Four and a half stars.
Charlotte’s Promise by Jennifer Moore Three stars, a fun read.
The Heart of a Vicar BY Sarah M. Eden Four stars.

GERI CHRISTENSEN
The Rooster Bar by John Grisham   Three stars. Good but not great.
You Don’t Own Me by Mary Higgins Clark . Four stars. An interesting plot and good characters. Very typical for this author
Thunder Point by Jack Higgins  I give this book four and a half stars.  I really liked this book. Fast-moving and great plot. Lots of action and good dialogue.
The Cat Who Saw Red by Lillian Jackson Braun. Four stars. I always enjoy these books about Jim Qwilleran and his mystery-solving with the help of his Siamese cat, Koko.
Mrs. Polifax on the China Station by Dorothy Gilman  Four stars. I LOVE books about Mrs. Polifax and his adventures as she travels to far-reaching places in the world.
Messenger of Truth by Jacqueline Winspear  I give this book three stars.  It’s a Maisie Dobbs book.
The Last Anniversary by Lianne Moriarty. Three and a half stars. Interesting, intriguing and off-beat.

The Pioneers by David McCullough  About pioneers who came to settle Ohio after the Revolutionary war.  Five stars.
The Female Brain by LouAnn Brizandine Three and a half stars.  Very engaging
The Little Book of Lykke by Meik Weiking.  Secrets of Happiness from the World’s Happiest People. Three and a half stars.
Siblings Without Rivalry: How To Help Your Children  Live Together So That You Can Live, too by Adele Faber  Three and a half stars

Why Gender Matters by Leonard Sax.  Four stars.

What Alice Forgot by Lianne Moriarty  Three stars
Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie  Four stars

The Encore by Charity Tillemann-Dick  Five stars

SUE DE MARTINI
The Library Book by Susan Orlean. Hundreds of thousands of books burned in a fire.  Hundreds of books damaged that had to be frozen for 2 years to kill mold and bacteria.   Five stars
What Stands In A Storm by Kim Cross. The story of various people who were affected by a tornado in Alabama. Three stars
Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate. The Story of of  Jennifer Tens who popularized adoption. She legitimately took children who were abandoned orphans but she also kidnapped children from poor families and adopted them to wealthy families.   Four stars
Last Boat Out of Shanghai : The Story of the Chinese Who Fled Mao’s Revolution by Helen Zu  True story of four different young people who live in Shanghai prior to World War II.  Five stars
Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher. Absolutely wonderful book about a group of people who gather together in a big home in Scotland over the Christmas holidays.  Five stars
Where did you go, Bernadette?  By Maria Semple.  Four stars for fun and laughter.
